The Show
Open singing auditions are held throughout the country, and
a list of 500 pop hopefuls is drawn up. These contestants are
then whittled down by the judging panel to just 50. These lucky
few are then presented to the public, who each week vote on who
stays and who goes.
Initially the 50 contestants are split into five groups, with
the two most popular contestants from each group making it through
to the final 10 places.
Once the final 10 contestants are selected, one is voted out
each week until a winner is revealed.
Last years winner, Will Young, as well as runner's up Gareth
Gates and Darius Danesh, each launched successful solo careers.
The Prize
The eventual winner of Pop Idol is awarded a record contract,
which includes an album deal and a headline place on the Pop Idol
